Guling – Kuliang

What did people do on Kuliang 100 years ago?

Maybe the first question is – what were foreigners doing in Fuzhou (Foochow) one hundred years ago?

Many worked during the year in Fuzhou as missionaries, and were running schools in the city as well as further out in the countryside, building and working in hospitals and medical missions.  The city was a busy port, with many companies dealing in the tea trade.  These people worked hard during the year, and often saw very few foreigners other than the ones who were working with them in their school, church, or business.  They also had health issues, and on Kuliang there was a small hospital/Sanatorium, where they could go to recover their health.  To go to a place where there were many other foreigners where they could relax, speak English, and enjoy their own cultural activities was a real joy.

These are clippings from the local newsletter,  The Kuliang Register.

I was born in Foochow in 1939 and my family would go up to Kuliang. I have seen photos of chairs my mother said they went up in.
My father was a doctor on Nantai Island I think, but we lived in the walled city.
I so want to visit and see where I was born.
