Guling – Kuliang

The Old Swimming Pool

There is nothing fresher than swimming in clear mountain water to cool off during the summer.  Kuliang has wonderful streams and waterfalls with small pools below where the more adventurous swimmers could paddle around, but for families, having a swimming pool where the water was still and children could splash and swim safely was a real delight on hot summer days.

The main swimming pool on Kuliang was built by two businessmen at the turn of the century, but was soon sold to a group of families who all owned a share.  The water for the pool was diverted from one of the small streams on the mountain, and was refreshingly cool.

Swimming was an established part of daily life in Kuliang. The main pool operated with scheduled swim times, typically separating hours for men, women, and children. This rhythm allowed families to enjoy the water while maintaining the social customs of the time.

In addition to the main pool, there was a smaller and more private swimming place known as the Half Moon Pool. Tucked at the back of the hill, it offered a quieter and more intimate setting. Mothers and children especially seem to have enjoyed it, appreciating its size and friendly atmosphere.

Together, these pools became part of the summer routine that shaped life on the mountain.
